Since the
Cayman Islands were originally under British control, American citizens need to get a work
visa. Temporary work permits are good for up to 6 months, whereas, if you intend to
stay longer, you will need to apply for an Annual work permit. Anyone intending to
work for more than 3 months has to also get a medical examination. Since the Cayman
Islands speak English, the process is fairly straight forward and easy. There are
several exemptions from getting a work pemit, volunteer programs or short term teaching
for example, but you can only work there, under those specific categories, for up to 7
days.
There are three Islands, Grand Cayman (the largest
one), Cayman Brac, and Little Cayman. With only about 50,000 residents and over
1,000,000 tourists per year, there are plenty of opportunities; but you will have to do
some research and call around as there are alot of competitors who want to work in this
ocean paradise. Seven Mile Beach is where all the hotels and activities are located
as well as some good restaurants in Georgetown.
Jobs center around, spa, scuba and other water related
sports, boat staff, waiter and waitress, and resort staff. Interestingly, quite
awhile back, the Cayman Islands positioned itself to be a major offshore financial center.
The Islands boast a whopping 279 banks. So if you have a financial or
accounting background, you may be able to break into the job market as well.
