The
capital of Australia is Canberra (I bet most of you thought it was Sydney right?).The population is comprised of 92% European, 7%
Asian, and 1% other (Aborginal and Middle Eastern primarily). The population is around 21.5 million, over 90% of
which live in coastal areas.Employment can be
found in the main cities of Brisbane, Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth, and
Darwin as well as the huge ranches that are spread throughout the interior and water
related jobs along the Great Barrier Reef.
The Great Barrier Reef stretches for over 1,600 miles
and includes about 900 Islands.With
approximately two million people visiting the reef each year, there are plenty of jobs to
be found in the tourism arena.Since Brisbane
is the major jumping off point for exploring the reef, job searches should start here.
Some of the more unique jobs in Australia that we have
in our joblisting are; pearl diving, gold mining, and cowboy ranch work.
U.S. residents can obtain a Work and Holiday (subclass
462) visa for people age 18 to 30 who want to travel and work for up to 12 months in a
temporary or casual job. The visa allows you to; enter and reenter Australia at any
time during the 12 months granted on the visa, work for up to 6 months with any number of
employers, and study for up to 4 months. The visa costs $230 (Australian dollars).
Long term visas are granted for people who already
have a job before applying (the employer helps with the visa processing), professionals
and other skilled migrants (ages 18 to 45 years old), business people (those who want to
establish, manage, or develop a new or existing company in Australia), specialist entry
(people who want to participate in specific professional, cultural, social or research
activities), doctors and nurses, and people who wish to work outside of the main city
areas (rural work like farms, etc.).
For the professionals and other skilled migrants
category, you can go to the following website and enter your resume. Employers in
Australia then search through the database. The website is simply a resume lisiting and
does not actually help find employers that will hire you (again, it simply allows for
employers to have a way to find you if they are searching for specific sets of skills that
are difficult to find n Australia)
